A macro-comparative perspective on thematic elements

This work aims to frame in macro comparative perspective the form and the behaviour of thematic elements, present in the verbal system of some Indo-European and extra Indo-European languages, within the framework of Distributed Morphology. This morphological element, which is called thematic vowel in the literature, is problematic because it has different forms and functions not only cross-linguistically but also within languages themselves. This thesis presents a description of this phenomenon in synchrony in a small sample of languages (Catalan, Spanish, West Armenian, Slovenian, Serbo-Croatian, and North Saami). Subsequently, the languages of this sample are compared with a possible theoretical explanation that manages to frame all the differences in these elements, referencing the diachronic change from Latin to the Romance Languages. Moreover, this thesis explores the possible relation of thematic elements with the span Asp < Voice < v, which is then confronted with the frameworks of Distributed Morphology and Nanosyntax. Lastly, the thesis presents a brief consideration on Germanic Languages and thematic elements.

L'elaborato si propone di inquadrare in ottica macro comparativa la forma e il comportamento degli elementi tematici presenti nel sistema verbale di alcune lingue indoeuropee ed extra indoeuropee, all'interno del framework Distributed Morphology. Questo elemento morfologico, a cui ci si riferisce nella letteratura con il termine vocale tematica, risulta problematico perché non solo assume forme e funzioni eterogenee dal punto di vista interlinguistico, ma anche internamente alle singole lingue. Questa tesi presenta una descrizione di questo fenomeno in sincronia in un piccolo campione di lingue (il catalano, lo spagnolo, l'armeno occidentale, lo sloveno, il serbo-croato e il sami del nord). Successivamente le lingue di questo campione vengono confrontate con una possibile spiegazione teorica che riesca a inquadrare tutte le diverse sfaccettature degli elementi tematici, prendendo spunto dal processo diacronico tra latino e lingue romanze. Viene inoltre evidenziato il possibile rapporto di questo elemento morfologico con lo span Asp < Voice < v e vengono considerate le implicazioni di questo span dal punto di vista di Distributed Morphology e Nanosyntax. Infine, l'ultimo capitolo presenta una breve considerazione sulle lingue germaniche e l'elemento tematico.
