The thesis explores the iconography of Saint Anne teaching the Virgin Mary to read, focusing on late medieval England, a historical and geographical context where this imagery had resonance. Through an interdisciplinary analysis that integrates historical-artistic, social, and pedagogical perspectives, the research investigates how these depictions reflect and construct ideals of femininity and motherhood in the Middle Ages. Special attention is given to the comparison between the education reserved for men and that for women, highlighting the social and cultural implications of these differences. Additionally, the work examines the role of women as transmitters of knowledge and religious values, offering a new interpretation of Saint Anne not only as a didactic figure but also as a spiritual one, preparing Mary for her future role as the mother of Christ. Finally, the thesis highlights how the iconography of Saint Anne was used to perpetuate certain educational and gender ideals, providing a crucial interpretative key to understanding the lasting impact of female education in the cultural history of Western Europe.
