Introduction It’s widely known in the literature that children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) face greater difficulties than peers with typical development (TD) in acquiring some syntactic domains such as relative sentences, wh-questions, passive sentences. It is not yet clear how the process of acquiring negative sentences takes place, in particular on the understanding side. Over the years, in fact, many studies have investigated the development of the first forms of denial produced by children, but very few are those who have questioned what are the types of denial that children understand (even before producing them), at what age they reach these skills and whether or not there are differences with children with speech disorder. Aims This thesis project has two aims. First, we want to investigate the acquisition pattern of understanding different types of negative sentences in children from 3 to 6 years. Secondly, it is proposed to investigate any differences in acquisition in a group of children with DPL compare to typical developing peers. Materials and Methods The study was conducted on a sample of 44 Italian children, divided into two groups: 28 typical development children and 16 children with SLI. A Truth Value Judgment Task was administered as a game to test their understanding of 4 types of negative sentences (sentence negation, constituent negation, negation with neg-words, negation with “mica”), with the addition of affirmative sentences as fillers. The test consists of 30 items, in which each type of sentence appears 6 times, half in the true condition and half in the false condition.
