This thesis investigates into the landscape of security sector reforms (SSR) in the Western Balkans, with the focus on the multifaceted challenges, incremental progress, and potential ways forward. Through our work, we focused on an in-depth exploration of historical legacies, ethnic tensions, and the enduring repercussions of conflict, with the goal of discovering and showing the intricate tapestry that shapes security dynamics in the Balkan region. Through research and analysis, we scrutinise the evolution of security institutions, shedding light on their militarisation, politicisation, and susceptibility to corruption. Furthermore, we investigate the work of international actors leading SSR initiatives, assessing their efficacy in addressing different challenges faced. Despite the obstacles along this journey, our study uncovers glimpses of progress and avenues for reform. We especially focus on the importance of nurturing unified, professional security institutions grounded in the principles of the rule of law and equitable service provision to all communities. By navigating the complex terrain of SSR in the Western Balkans, our thesis offers invaluable insights into the intricacies of post-conflict stabilisation and the quest for sustainable peace and security in the region. Through meticulous examination and robust analysis, we wanted to contribute to the ongoing discourse on SSR, paving the way for informed policies and initiatives geared towards fostering lasting peace and prosperity in the Western Balkans.

Abstract
Through meticulous examination and robust analysis, we wanted to contribute to the ongoing discourse on SSR, paving the way for informed policies and initiatives geared towards fostering lasting peace and prosperity in the Western Balkans.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
