This thesis examines the strategies of making requests, the use of indirectness, and the expression of politeness in the Zambian second language (L2) variety of English. By analyzing conversations in a drama series and discourse tasks , the study identifies how Zambian speakers of English employ different linguistic strategies to make requests in a socially appropriate manner. It explores the cultural influences on communication styles and how these affect the level of indirectness and politeness. The findings contribute to our understanding of the pragmatic features of Zambian English and offer insights into effective communication in multilingual contexts.
