This exploratory study examines the functioning of educational initiatives like Tutoria Girassol, a Brazilian online tutoring program, as potential solutions to social sustainable education as reported by UNESCO’s global sustainable development goals. We will be focusing on the motivations that drive both participation and the creation of such programs. By analyzing the profiles of volunteers involved, we aim to better understand the characteristics of those who engage in educational support roles through a combination of qualitative methods, including interviews, questionnaires, and video analysis of tutoring sessions. Additionally, we will investigate the dynamics between tutors and children, focusing on how emotion regulation capacities and personality traits may influence relationship-building, the child’s autonomy, and the tutor’s ability to provide academic assistance. While our sample size is limited, the study seeks to identify the effectiveness and limitations of this kind of educational support program, exploring how these insights might inform the creation of similar programs as complementary to the traditional educational system. Ultimately, this research provides a deeper understanding of how educational programs in non-Western contexts, like Brazil, operate and how emotion regulation and personalized support can serve as valuable tools to improve challenging educational systems.
