The development of body image becomes particularly salient during adolescence. As a result, it is likely that the adolescent may recognize a discrepancy between their perceived body shape and the idealized one, exposing them to a greater risk of body dissatisfaction and the development of issues related to eating behavior. Conversely, it is possible that the adolescent accepts the changes in their body image, embracing it and taking care of it in an adaptive way. Parents, particularly the mother, can convey beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors related to body image and eating behaviors, both explicitly, through verbal communication, and implicitly, through parental modeling. This cross-sectional study, conducted on a sample of 51 mother-child dyads, investigated several aspects: the relationship between positive and negative body image and the eating symptoms of both mothers and children; the relationship between the mother’s internalization of sociocultural beauty ideals and the negative body image and eating symptoms of the children; and conversely, the relationship between the mother’s positive and negative body image and the internalization of sociocultural beauty ideals by the children. Finally, the study aimed to explore the differences between mothers and children in these same constructs.

Abstract
Finally, the study aimed to explore the differences between mothers and children in these same constructs.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
