This dissertation aims to analyze the enduring legacy of British colonialism in postcolonial India, with a particular focus on its origins during the British Raj. The study examines two significant literary works: Edward Morgan Forster’s colonial work A Passage to India and Kiran Desai’s renowned post-colonial novel The Inheritance of Loss. Through a detailed analysis of the novels’ settings and characters, the study explores some of the most prominent themes in postcolonial literature, such as cultural identity and alienation which continue to influence and shape contemporary Indian society.
