This study investigates the role of concierges in public residential buildings in San Siro, Milan, aiming to understand whether they can be considered welfare actors and, if so, what form of welfare they embody. Through the ethnographic method, the daily practices of the concierges are explored, along with the various life trajectories that shape their actions and meanings; the ethnography also considers the strategies for managing and negotiating urban space, which is situated in a liminal zone between public and private. Concurrently, the reflection on the type of welfare embodied by the concierges is framed within the anthropological literature on welfare, which understands it not as an abstract entity but as a lived institution shaped by daily practices and relationships. This approach demands the analysis and deconstruction of concepts such as “community” and “social cohesion”, often central in welfare discourse, to recognize their complexity and non-neutrality. Moreover, the study draws on the knowledge developed over many years by the Mapping San Siro research group, contributing a small piece to the research conducted with and about the neighborhood.

Abstract
Moreover, the study draws on the knowledge developed over many years by the Mapping San Siro research group, contributing a small piece to the research conducted with and about the neighborhood.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
