Réécriture, mémoire et héritage colonial dans La migration des cœurs de Maryse Condé et L'empreinte à Crusoé de Patrick Chamoiseau

This thesis aims to analyse two francophone rewritings of English literature classics: L’empreinte à Crusoé by Patrick Chamoiseau and La migration des cœurs by Maryse Condé. The purpose is to examine how the authors draw on their hypotexts to bring out the memory of the colonial and slave past which shaped their homeland, the French Antilles, as well as the consequences of these historical events in the post-abolitionist period. After having outlined a theoretical framework on the concepts of Intertextuality and rewriting and having emphasised their rôle on post-colonial and francophone writers, the relationship between memory and history will be introduced, as well as the necessity of alternative approaches to traditional historiography to account for slavery. Literature can fulfil this purpose, as shown by Chamoiseau’s and Condé’s works, which succeed in putting emphasis on the History of their islands and on the histories of people who live there, notwithstanding their strong bond with the occidental hypotexts, in a transcolonial perspective.

Ce mémoire se propose d’analyser deux réécritures francophones d’ouvrages classiques de langue anglaise : L’empreinte à Crusoé de Patrick Chamoiseau et La migration des cœurs de Maryse Condé. L’objectif est d’examiner comment les auteurs exploitent les hypotextes pour faire émerger la mémoire du passé colonial et esclavagiste qui caractérise leur terre d’origine, les Antilles françaises, ainsi que les conséquences de ces événements historiques dans la période post-abolitionniste. Ainsi, après avoir esquissé un cadre théorique sur les concepts d’intertextualité, réécriture et sur leur rôle chez les écrivains postcoloniaux et francophones, on aborde la question de la dialectique entre histoire et mémoire et la nécessité d’utiliser des moyens alternatifs à l’historiographie traditionnelle pour rendre compte de l’esclavage. La littérature s’avère apte à remplir ce propos, comme le démontrent les romans de Chamoiseau et Condé qui, tout en gardant un lien étroit avec les hypotextes occidentaux dans une perspective transcoloniale, arrivent à mettre l’accent sur l’Histoire de leurs îles et sur les histoires des personnages qui les peuplent.
