HOW HAS TRANSLATION CHANGED? THE EVOLVING ROLE OF THE TRANSLATOR WITH TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS

The aim of this thesis is to explore how the world of translation and the role of the professional translator have changed over the last 20 years. To achieve this goal, a chapter is presented where the role of the professional translator and the conformation of the translation market are shown, while the other chapter lists the main technological innovations that have occurred over the years and that have impacted the profession of translation. Finally, the third and last chapter presents the survey via questionnaire that was carried out by interviewing professional translators. The results show that translators are generally dissatisfied with the current situation of their work, mainly due to the fact that there is a progressive decline in translation-related fees, mainly due to the fact that, with the advancement of new technologies, clients ask translators to carry out mainly post-editing instead of producing a translation from scratch, an operation that is then paid less. Another reason is the presence of clients who tend to pay less to the translator who uses a CAT tool. In general, it can be said that for these and other reasons presented in the research, the role of the translator has changed, also thanks to the spread of new technologies. The translators have therefore proposed their ideas, impressions and advice on how to reorganize university education in the field of translation. In conclusion, this research contributes to showing how much the role of the translator and the world of translation itself have changed in the last 20 years.
