This thesis focuses on the intersection of issues related to physical disability and women's education, with reference to the United States in the late 19th century. An overview of women's education and institutions for the education of the disabled of the period is provided; in addition, it examines the figure of Helen Keller, a deaf-blind child who, with the intervention of her teacher Anne Sullivan, learned to read and write and began her emancipatory journey that would make her a writer and activist for the rights of the disabled.
Questa tesi si focalizza sull'intersezione delle problematiche relative a disabilità fisica ed educazione delle donne, con riferimento agli Stati Uniti alla fine del XIX secolo. Viene fornita una panoramica sull'istruzione femminile e sulle istituzioni per l'educazione dei disabili del periodo; inoltre, si prende in esame la figura di Helen Keller, bambina sordocieca che, grazie all'intervento dell'insegnante Anne Sullivan, impara a leggere e scrivere e inizia il suo percorso emancipativo che la renderà scrittrice e attivista per i diritti dei disabili.
