The fashion industry is one of the most distinctive economic and cultural sectors for European products in international markets. At the same time, the textile industry and all the activities related to it have a significant environmental impact, making the fashion industry the fourth most polluting sector in the European Union. Since the 1990s, the European legislation has increasingly focused its attention on regulationg this sector, in the effort to reduce the ecological footprint that results from a piece of clothing throughout its entire life circle, from its production to consumption and eventually disposal. This effort seeks to protect the environment, but also promote the development of high-quality products, that align with the environmental concerns of European consumers. This thesis aims to analyse the main environmental challenges in the European fashion industry and explore the effectivness of the European Union's legislation in reducting its ecological impact. The final section of this work will be dedicated to the presenting examples of sustainable practices, such as Made in Italy brands that embraced sustainability as the core of their business strategy and transformations withing the fashion industry itself, as evidenced by the Copenhagen Fashion Week.
