This thesis examines the role of veterinarians in supporting pet owners during the grieving process following the loss of their animals, with a particular focus on the Veneto and Calabria regions. Pet bereavement is often underestimated, yet it represents a deeply emotional and challenging experience for many owners. Veterinarians, as the primary professionals involved, face the dual responsibility of addressing the clinical needs of animals and providing emotional support to their clients in moments of great vulnerability. The study investigates how veterinarians perceive and manage pet loss, aiming to better understand current practices, challenges, and potential areas for improvement. Special emphasis is placed on relational and communication aspects, such as active listening and Narrative Medicine, which can foster a more empathetic and structured approach within veterinary practice. Additionally, the thesis explores the psychological impact of this work on veterinarians, highlighting the need for training tools and interprofessional support to safeguard their well-being. By analyzing cultural and regional perspectives, the research seeks to propose strategies that can enhance the quality of support offered to pet owners and promote greater social awareness on this issue.
