Exploring the impact of AI-based services on humans. A case study: echo chambers on social media.

Nowadays, most developed societies are increasingly dependent on digital technologies. The benefit of experiencing a revolution brings with it the responsibility to understand the risks and opportunities along the way. This work aims to aid theoretical understanding regarding the consequences of this digital revolution, ultimately focusing on a practical metric to quantify the effect of echo chambers in social media. This dissertation offers a clear picture of the birth and especially the consequences of the digital revolution. Starting from the ambiguity of the term intelligence, it provides a theoretical analysis in the information age. After presenting the impact on society, politics and the individual, it presents a case study on quantifying the effect of echo chambers on Twitter. In addition to explaining the entire architecture behind the generation of the metric studied, it tests the stability and efficiency of this by reporting the results. The development of methodology to prevent digital and AI-related risks will be of paramount importance in the coming years.
