The project "Experimental study on Plate heat exchangers in a vapor-compression ammonia test rig" is part of NTNU's effort in the research of new technologies towards more sustainable refrigeration systems using natural refrigerants. In particular, the vapor-compression ammonia test-rig was developed to test plate heat exchangers provided by Alfa Laval as condenser and evaporators. The aim is to perform test under specified condensation and evaporation temperatures and to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the heat exchangers. The scope of the thesis is to bring on the work done by the previous master student, and prepare the experimental set-up for a future student. The actual building and assembly phase has been followed everyday, supporting the technicians and the workshop staff whenever was necessary. The project has been finalized by the sensors choice and carrying out a risk assessment, to prepare all the workers and the undersigned to operate in completely safety. Subsequently, the system was started-up, with dedicated efforts focused on understanding how to achieve cycle stability and making the necessary adjustments to ensure reliable, accurate, and, above all, useful data. Finally, a preliminary measurement campaign was conducted.
