The thesis examines the typology of covered portraits, which spread between the 15th and 16th Centuries and are characterized by decorated reverses and movable elements designed to conceal the main image. Following a historical overview of protective and concealing mechanisms in art from antiquity to Middle Ages, the analysis focuses on the historical-artistic context that fostered the development of this portrait form, exploring its diffusion, evolution, decline, and the formal and functional solutions adopted, through the study of significant case studies.
