This thesis studies the effects of the famine of 1590-1592 and of the 1630-1631 plague on child abandonment and on the foundling population in the Ca’ di Dio (House of God) orphanage in Padova. The economic, cultural and social reasons at the origin of exposures are explored, as well as the ways in which demographic crises influenced the ratio between the abandonments of legitimate and illegitimate children. Special attention is given to the concept of honour and to the way in which it influenced both the parents in their choices regarding their separation from their own offspring and the foundlings themselves, who had to fall in line within the same code of honour inside the institute. Observations are made on the way in which girls were especially subjected to the hospital’s attention and to disciplinary practices aimed at the tutelage of their sexual virtues, and on how this offers a comparison with the fates of their own original mothers. Among other themes that get scrutinized are the return of foundlings to their biological parents, reasons and characteristics of adoptions, the role of wetnurses in the upbringing of abandoned children and their life inside the Ca’ di Dio, peculiarly in regards to their education and professional training. Other objects of exploration are the history of the institute, its administrative structure and the features of its workforce. This research has been based on accounting registers, the ‘Books of Acts’ and other folders containing mixed documents, stored in the fond of the Istituto degli Esposti in the State Archive of Padova.
