"Il custode del tesoro". Ovidio come veicolo di tradizione nell’Atlante Mnemosyne di Aby Warburg

This thesis investigates the role of Ovid as a vehicle of tradition in Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas, with particular focus on panels 33, 34, and 35. Starting from the dissemination and manuscript tradition of the Metamorphoses during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the study traces the pathways through which Ovidian narratives, and the images derived from them, have survived and been transformed within the European visual culture. Through the analysis of iconographic sources and humanist texts, the research highlights how, in Warburg’s thought, Ovid assumes the role of a “guardian of the treasure”: a mediator between ancient and modern, between word and image, between myth and cultural memory. The three panels under consideration reveal the interweaving of classical mythology with early modern artistic forms, offering a concrete example of Warburg’s iconological method and his focus on the afterlife of antiquity.

La presente tesi si propone di indagare il ruolo di Ovidio come veicolo di tradizione nell’Atlante Mnemosyne di Aby Warburg, concentrandosi in particolare sulle tavole 33, 34 e 35. A partire dalla diffusione e dalla fortuna manoscritta delle Metamorfosi nel Medioevo e nel Rinascimento, il lavoro ricostruisce i percorsi attraverso cui le narrazioni ovidiane, e le immagini da esse derivate, sono sopravvissute e si sono trasformate nel contesto visivo europeo. Attraverso l’analisi di fonti iconografiche e testi umanistici, si evidenzia come la figura di Ovidio assuma, nella riflessione di Warburg, il ruolo di “custode del tesoro”: un mediatore tra antico e moderno, tra parola e immagine, tra mito e memoria culturale. Le tre tavole analizzate mostrano in particolare l’intreccio tra mitologia classica e forme artistiche della prima età moderna, offrendo un esempio concreto del metodo iconologico warburghiano e della sua attenzione alle sopravvivenze dell’antico.
