This thesis presents an analysis of the political, military, and naval developments between Spain and the Republic of the United Provinces from the early 17th century until the Peace of Münster in 1648. The study examines the conflicts in the colonial context, with particular attention to the clashes in the Caribbean and Brazil after 1621, as well as the war in Northwestern Europe, taking into account the commercial conflict pursued by the Spanish Netherlands and the Crown, which culminated in the Battle of the Downs.
Il lavoro di tesi propone un’analisi degli sviluppi politici, militari e navali avvenuti tra Spagna e Repubblica delle Province Unite a partire dall’inizio del XVII secolo fino alla pace di Munster del 1648. Lo studio analizza i conflitti nel contesto coloniale con particolare attenzione allo scontro nei Caraibi e nel Brasile dopo il 1621 e anche la guerra nel contesto dell’Europa Nord-occidentale, considerando il conflitto commerciale portato avanti dai Paesi Bassi Spagnoli e la Corona, culminato con la battaglia dei Downs.
