Identification has a long history in psychodynamic theory. It is presented as a multifaceted and multiform construct, elaborated according to different perspectives and implicated in various psychic processes. It is a fundamental mechanism of individual development, playing a central role in the structuring of the psyche and the formation of identity, and can take on defensive functions, as well as evolve into dysfunctional and maladaptive forms. This paper offers a systematic review of the literature exploring the different conceptualisations of identification in the psychodynamic field, with the aim of providing an integrated understanding and identifying a possible common core to its many theoretical variations. Starting from the formulations of some of the major authors in the classical psychoanalytic landscape, more recent contributions are then analysed, which show the possibility of tracing transversal elements between the different conceptions, which converge in highlighting the constitutive function of the Self, the defensive function and the polymorphic nature of this process. In conclusion, the thesis emphasises the relevance of the construct of identification and offers ideas for further developments in psychodynamic research.

Abstract
In conclusion, the thesis emphasises the relevance of the construct of identification and offers ideas for further developments in psychodynamic research.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
