Given the urgency of the climate crisis, Italy’s energy transition requires robust tools to analyse and guide system evolution. Many existing models simulate long-term scenarios but often overlook the detailed pathways and hourly dynamics needed to integrate intermittent renewables effectively. This work uses EnergyScope Pathway, an open-source model that optimises both long-term investment decisions and hourly operation across the entire energy system. Applied to the Italian context, the model helps identify consistent strategies based on energy efficiency, electrification, and renewable integration. The aim is not to propose a new method, but to demonstrate how a transparent and adaptable modelling framework can support the analysis of national energy transitions with greater clarity and reproducibility.

Abstract
Given the urgency of the climate crisis, Italy’s energy transition requires robust tools to analyse and guide system evolution. Many existing models simulate long-term scenarios but often overlook the detailed pathways and hourly dynamics needed to integrate intermittent renewables effectively. This work uses EnergyScope Pathway, an open-source model that optimises both long-term investment decisions and hourly operation across the entire energy system. Applied to the Italian context, the model helps identify consistent strategies based on energy efficiency, electrification, and renewable integration. The aim is not to propose a new method, but to demonstrate how a transparent and adaptable modelling framework can support the analysis of national energy transitions with greater clarity and reproducibility.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
