Prima degli Embriachi: la Bottega a figure inchiodate e la produzione dei cofanetti in osso in Italia tra il XIV e il XV secolo

The heart of this research is the Workshop of Nailed Figures, considered perhaps the first workshop engaged in the serial and standardized production of bone bridal caskets. The thesis opens with a general overview of bone casket production in Italy between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, outlining a comprehensive framework that allows the positioning of this workshop within the broader craft context of the time. The study then focuses specifically on the Workshop of Nailed Figures, addressing still unresolved questions regarding its place of origin and its chronology. Through detailed analysis and the cataloguing of three key examples – selected for their typological, stylistic, and iconographic significance – the research seeks to reveal the complexity of this atelier. The thesis aims not only to deepen understanding of a still little-explored chapter in the art of medieval objects, but also to offer new interpretative perspectives on a production that appears to have served as a model and forerunner for the more widely known Workshop of the Embriachi.

Il cuore di questa ricerca è la Bottega a figure inchiodate, considerata forse la prima realtà impegnata nella produzione seriale e standardizzata di cofanetti nuziali in osso. Il lavoro si apre con una panoramica generale sulla produzione di cofanetti in osso in Italia tra il XIV e il XV secolo, tracciando un quadro complessivo che permetta di cogliere la posizione di questa bottega nel più ampio scenario artigianale dell'epoca. L'elaborato si concentra poi specificatamente sulla Bottega a figure inchiodate, affrontando i quesiti ancora aperti relativi al luogo d'origine della produzione e alla sua cronologia. Attraverso l'analisi puntuale e la schedatura di tre esemplari chiave - selezionati per la loro rilevanza tipologica, stilistica e iconografica - si cerca di restituire la complessità di questo atelier. La tesi si propone non solo di approfondire un capitolo ancora poco esplorato dell'arte degli oggetti medievali, ma anche di offrire nuove prospettive di lettura su una produzione che sembrerebbe fare da modello e capostipite alla Bottega degli Embriachi, più ampiamente conosciuta.
