Approcci di turismo sostenibile per un itinerario archeoastronomico in Sicilia

This research aims to develop an archaeoastronomical itinerary within the Sicilian territory which, through its megalithic sites, aspires to become a partner of the European Route of Megalithic Culture. This cultural route has been certified since 2013 by the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme, an initiative launched in 1987 to safeguard cultural heritage by fostering a deeper understanding of European identity and history. Among the heritage sites protected and promoted by this route are those megalithic monuments that “have been interpreted as observatories, through which it is possible to chart the movement of celestial objects, as they are all oriented towards the movement of the sun." In line with the values of the Council of Europe, the Cultural Routes programme promotes intercultural dialogue, the creation of transnational cultural cooperation networks, and the integration of sustainable tourism practices and environmental respect. For this programme, cultural routes are conceived as projects through which educational, heritage-related, and tourism-based forms of cooperation (CM/Res(2013)66) are activated, thereby supporting sustainable territorial and tourism development. Following an exploration of the most recent literature on the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe as enablers of sustainable tourism projects, this study will examine the specific features of the European Route of Megalithic Culture through the analysis of available documents (e.g., evaluation reports, policy briefs, books, and academic articles), supplemented by focused case studies on key nodes of the route such as Stonehenge (UK), Newgrange (IE), Antequera, and the Dolmens of Menga (ES). The outcomes of this preliminary phase will contribute to identify and analyse a potential network of partners that could facilitate the integration of the Sicilian territory into the route as a new node. In this regard, interviews will be conducted with local stakeholders, including associations, heritage authorities, and municipal representatives, whose involvement would be essential for the implementation of the project. In the broader perspective of route development, attention will also be given to sites and partners not exclusively linked to megalithism, but nonetheless relevant to an integrated interpretation involving astronomical alignments. The final section will offer strategic recommendations for local stakeholders interested in taking the first steps towards establishing an archaeoastronomical cultural route, envisioned as a driver of sustainable tourism.

Questa ricerca ha l'obiettivo di elaborare un itinerario archeoastronomico nel territorio siciliano che, con i suoi siti megalitici, possa ambire ad essere partner della Via Europea del Megalitico. Questa rotta è stata certificata dal 2013 dal Programma degli Itinerari Culturali del Consiglio d’Europa, un programma nato nel 1987 per preservare il patrimonio culturale attraverso una migliore comprensione dell’identità e della storia europea. Tra il patrimonio tutelato e valorizzato da questo itinerario rientrano anche quei monumenti megalitici che “sono stati identificati come osservatori creati per tracciare i movimenti dei corpi celesti, poiché sono tutti orientati secondo i movimenti del sole”. Seguendo i valori del CoE, il Programma degli Itinerari Culturali europei si fa promotore del dialogo interculturale, di creazione di reti di cooperazione culturale transnazionali e sostenitore di una sinergia tra pratiche turistiche sostenibili e rispetto dell’ambiente circostante. Per questo programma, gli itinerari culturali sono progetti attraverso i quali forme di cooperazione educativa, patrimoniali e turistiche (CM/Res (2013) 66) sono attivate, favorendo forme di sviluppo territoriale e turistico sostenibili. Dopo aver esplorato la più recente letteratura sugli itinerari culturali del Consiglio d’Europa come attivatori di progetti di turismo sostenibile, la mia ricerca approfondirà le caratteristiche della Via Europea del Megalitico attraverso l'analisi di documenti disponibili (ad es. evaluation reports, policy brief, libri e articoli), integrati con alcuni focus su specifici nodi della Via, quali Stonehenge (UK), Newgrange (IE), Antequera e i Dolmen del Menga (ES). Il risultato di questa prima fase del lavoro, servirà a costruire ed analizzare la potenziale rete di partner che potrebbe consentire al territorio siciliano di aderire all’itinerario come ulteriore nodo della Via. A questo riguardo saranno effettuate interviste a attori locali che rappresentano le realtà che potrebbero dare forma al progetto (e.g. associazioni, soprintendenze, municipalità). In un’ottica di sviluppo dell’itinerario saranno considerati anche siti e partner non strettamente legati al megalitismo, ma pur sempre pertinenti alla lettura congiunta con gli astri. Nelle conclusioni si offriranno alcune indicazioni che potranno essere utilizzate dagli stakeholder del territorio preso in considerazione per compiere un primo passo verso la realizzazione di un itinerario culturale archeoastronomico, driver di turismo sostenibile.
