The aim of this dissertation is to explore the stereotype of the African American mammy, which is rooted in the slavery and civil war period in the United States (1861-65). I analyze the portrayal and evolution of this figure over time in the American popular imagination in order to understand its design and purpose (the white submission of African Americans) and the consequences on race relations in American society.
