The following paper aims to analyze the theme of sacrifice as a necessary element in the creation of a work of art. In particular, the research focuses on the examination of case studies taken from the works of Ivo Andrić, Edgar Allan Poe and David Cronenberg, many of which recursively present this theme within them. The analysis focuses mainly on works of art of a visual or literary nature, with particular attention to cases in which these two elements appear to be in close relation to each other. The first chapter aims to present the hermeneutic tools used during the analysis. Among these are the notions of visual culture and the ways in which it establishes a relationship with literature, for which reference is made to the texts of W.J.T. Mitchell and M. Cometa. The main theoretical notions regarding sacrifice are also presented, paying particular attention to the construction sacrifice, taken from the studies of M. Eliade. The other hermeneutic approach used in the thesis and which is therefore presented is the one contained in the works of R. Girad, where sacrifice plays a central role. The second chapter contains the analysis of the theme of sacrifice in the work of Ivo Andrić, more precisely in the works The Bridge on the Drina, Bridge on the Zepa, Bridges and Conversations with Goya, in order to demonstrate how there is a recurrence of this theme within the author's corpus, also linking it in some cases to visual culture. The third chapter investigates the developments of the theme in the writings The Oval Portrait, How to Write a Blackwood Story with its counterpart The Scythe of Time, Philosophy of Composition and The Lands of Arnheim by Edgar Allan Poe. The fourth and final chapter is instead dedicated to David Cronenberg's cinematographic works Crash, The Dead Zone, M. Butterfly, Videodrome and Naked Lunch, since it is above all in these works that the director has developed the relationship between violence, sacrifice and the process of creating a work of art. The conclusion of the study demonstrates, through the previous case studies, how it is possible to trace a link, in light of the dynamics between literature and visual culture, between sacrifice and the founding act in the creation of a work of art, for which the latter is confirmed to be necessary.
