The thesis studies the provenance and digital representation of indigenous cultural artefacts, focusing on the case of artefacts from the Sakha Republic, within the context of European museum digital collections. It aims to trace the historical mobility of these artefacts, studying the history of their movement from Sakha Republic to European museums, while also analysing how they are incorporated into curatorial practices of the museums. Additionally, the study analyses how these artefacts are represented in Open Data Collections of the British Museum and Europeana. The thesis addresses a gap in the research on Indigenous cultural heritage by focusing on the Sakha culture. Chapter one begins with a review of literature on provenance research and curation related to indigenous cultural heritage in general. Chapter two gives the background of the Sakha history and culture, and contains the case study of Sakha artefacts focusing on the collections of the British Museum and Europeana. Finally, chapter three answers the research questions by studying the objects’ histories, exhibition stories, and examines the digital representation of the Sakha artefacts. The thesis employs approaches from provenance research, the theory of object biographies, and digital content and metadata analysis.
