Background: Virtual Reality (VR) is an emerging technology that, in line with the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and European guidelines for digital health, offers new opportunities to enhance the effectiveness, personalization, and scalability of rehabilitation interventions. Despite evidence of its benefits in terms of motivation and therapeutic adherence, its adoption within Italian public healthcare services remains limited. Objectives: To assess the feasibility, usability, and acceptability of integrating VR into rehabilitation pathways within the AUSL Romagna healthcare system, exploring facilitators and barriers to adoption and investigating physiotherapists’ perceptions of clinical effectiveness. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional experimental study with prospective data collection was conducted. The sample consisted of physiotherapists employed in AUSL Romagna facilities, who participated in a practical session using a VR headset. Evaluation was carried out through a structured Likert-scale questionnaire (1–5 points), investigating usability, acceptability, perceived feasibility, clinical usefulness, barriers, and future perspectives. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests to compare subgroups. Results: Preliminary analysis indicates high acceptability of the tool (≥ 80% of scores ≥ 4/5), good perceived usability, and compatibility with different patient profiles. Perceived benefits included increased engagement and innovative potential, alongside awareness of possible organizational and training barriers. Conclusions: The integration of VR into rehabilitation pathways appears feasible and well-received by participating professionals, with potential for large-scale implementation provided that adequate technical training and organizational support are ensured. The project represents a replicable experimental model for other public healthcare settings, consistent with national and European digitalization strategies.
Background: La realtà virtuale (VR) è una tecnologia emergente che, in linea con gli obiettivi del Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR) e con le direttive europee per la sanità digitale, offre nuove opportunità per migliorare l’efficacia, la personalizzazione e la scalabilità degli interventi riabilitativi. Nonostante l’evidenza di benefici in termini di motivazione e aderenza terapeutica, la sua adozione nei servizi sanitari pubblici italiani resta limitata. Obiettivi: Valutare la fattibilità, l’usabilità e l’accettabilità dell’integrazione della VR nei percorsi riabilitativi dell’AUSL della Romagna, esplorando fattori facilitanti e ostacolanti l’adozione e indagando la percezione dell’efficacia clinica da parte dei fisioterapisti. Materiali e Metodi: È stato condotto uno studio sperimentale, trasversale, con raccolta prospettica di dati. Il campione era composto da fisioterapisti in servizio presso strutture dell’AUSL della Romagna, che hanno partecipato a una sessione pratica con visore VR. La valutazione è stata effettuata mediante questionario strutturato a scala Likert (1–5 punti), indagando usabilità, accettabilità, fattibilità percepita, utilità clinica, ostacoli e prospettive future. I dati sono stati analizzati con statistiche descrittive e test non parametrici per il confronto tra sottogruppi. Risultati: L’analisi preliminare indica un’elevata accettabilità dello strumento (≥ 80% di punteggi ≥ 4/5), buona percezione di usabilità e compatibilità con differenti profili di pazienti. Sono emersi benefici percepiti in termini di engagement e potenziale innovativo, unitamente alla consapevolezza di possibili barriere organizzative e formative. Conclusioni: L’integrazione della VR nei percorsi riabilitativi appare fattibile e ben accolta dai professionisti coinvolti, con prospettive di applicazione su larga scala a condizione di prevedere adeguata formazione tecnica e supporto organizzativo. Il progetto rappresenta un modello sperimentale replicabile in altri contesti sanitari pubblici, coerente con le strategie nazionali ed europee di digitalizzazione.
