Lang Shining was dispatched to China as a missionary in 1714 and entered the imperial court as a painter, serving through the reigns of the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong emperors. Subsequently, this paper will organize and analyze the research on Lang Shining conducted by Italian and Chinese scholars since the 20th century, focusing on his dual identity as a missionary and painter. It will discuss the different interpretations of this figure from different perspectives and cultural standpoints, and analyze the changes in people's views on Lang Shining and the reasons, taking into account the different historical contexts and cultural policies. Finally, this paper will provide a comparative summary of the dual interpretations of Lang Shining by both Eastern and Western perspectives and explain the reasons behind these interpretations. As a connecting point between Eastern and Western cultures and arts, Lang Shining represents more of a cultural phenomenon and symbol in art history, reflecting the views and needs regarding cultural exchange in the specific historical contexts of his time.
Nel 1714, Lang Shining fu inviato in Cina in qualità di missionario, entrando nella corte imperiale come pittore, e lavorò sotto i regni di Kangxi, Yongzheng e Qianlong. Durante questo periodo, studiò le tecniche e le composizioni della pittura cinese, integrandole con la sua formazione artistica occidentale. Attraverso un costante processo di miglioramento e innovazione, creò un nuovo stile artistico, risultando una figura di grande importanza nella storia dello scambio culturale tra Oriente e Occidente. La sua doppia identità di missionario e pittore di corte ha generato opinioni divergenti riguardo alla comprensione dei suoi risultati artistici e della sua posizione storica. Inizierò dunque analizzando l'evoluzione dello stile pittorico di Lang Shining, per poi riassumere i suoi successi artistici. Successivamente, questo articolo si concentrerà sulla sua doppia identità di missionario e pittore, raccogliendo e analizzando le ricerche effettuate da studiosi italiani e cinesi su Lang Shining a partire dal ventesimo secolo. Saranno discusse le diverse interpretazioni di questa figura sotto vari punti di vista e posizioni culturali, e, considerando i diversi contesti temporali e le politiche culturali, si analizzeranno le variazioni nelle opinioni di Lang Shining e le motivazioni sottostanti.Infine, verrà effettuato un confronto riassuntivo delle letture doppia di Lang Shining tra Oriente e Occidente, accompagnato da un'analisi delle relative motivazioni. In quanto punto di collegamento tra le culture e le arti di Cina e Occidente, Lang Shining rappresenta nella storia dell'arte un fenomeno culturale e simbolo, riflettendo le opinioni e le esigenze delle persone riguardo allo scambio culturale nel contesto di epoche specifiche.
