El portuñol: estado de la cuestión sobre un dialecto de contacto.

This study explores the linguistic phenomenon of Portuñol, a contact dialect that has emerged from the interecation between Portuguese and Spanish in communities along the boarder betweem Brazil and Spanish-speaking countries. This project offers an overview of the current knowledge, as well as an analysis of the existing academic literature. We focus on the case arising in the border region between Brazil and Uruguay, as it is considered the most significant. The proximity of both linguistic systems has enabled the mutual influence to transcend the purely lexical level and extend to other linguistic and extra-linguistic dimensions. The first chapter provides a theoretical introduction to the phenomenon, exploring the historical and social causes of its emergence. Specifically, it analyzes hey historical events - i.e., from the early conflicts between the Spanish and Portuguese empires in colonial times to the independence of Uruguay – as well as all the significant linguistic contacts that shaped the Río de la Plata. The chapter also reviews the early studies and theories approaches to Portuñol. The phenomenon was only recently discovered and brought to the academic attention by José Pedro Rona in the 1960s and there is no unified perspective among experts. Indeed, the variety of denominations reflects both the ambiguity and complexity of the topic. A crucial aspect of this project focuses on the socio-cultural dynamics affecting both sides of the border. In fact, this topic will be explored by dividing the paragraph in two: first addressing the Uruguayan perspective and finally, the Brazilian one, in order to understand how both communities experience and perceive their identity within the boardland. Special attention has been paid to the question of identity, i.e., how the border community perceives its belonging to a transition zone between two different cultures. In fact, the border between Uruguay and Brazil, like all other borders where a contact dialect has developed, is a hybrid space, where cultures merge and evolve, generating autonomous dynamics. The language education is another important dimension of the study: it examines the educational policies of both States and how they affects Portuñol. Finally, other cases of Portuñol both in America and in the rest of the world are explored, analyzing differences and similarities from a sociolinguistic approach.

Este estudio busca investigar el fenómeno lingüístico del Portuñol, un dialecto de contacto surgido del encuentro entre el portugués y el español a lo largo de la frontera entre Brasil y algunos países hispanohablantes. Este proyecto propone una revisión y un análisis crítico de la literatura existente, así como el estado general del conocimiento actual sobre el fenómeno. Por considerarse el más significativo, el trabajo se centra en el dialecto surgido en la región fronteriza entre Brasil y Uruguay, debido a la proximidad de ambos sistemas lingüísticos, lo que ha permitido que la influencia mutua trascienda el nivel puramente léxico y se extienda a otros niveles lingüísticos y extralingüísticos. El primer capítulo ofrece una introducción teórica, analizando las causas históricas y sociales de su surgimiento. En este sentido, se analizan los acontecimientos históricos más representativos – es decir, desde las primeras disputas entre los imperios español y portugués durante la época colonial hasta la independencia de Uruguay – así como todos los contactos lingüísticos significativos que tuvieron lugar en el Río de la Plata. También se exploran los primeros estudios y teorías sobre el Portuñol. En efecto, aún no existe un consenso entre expertos y académicos sobre la verdadera naturaleza de este fenómeno lingüístico, descubierto recientemente y de manera accidental por el profesor José Pedro Rona en la década de 1960. La gran variedad de denominaciones que se le atribuyen refleja la ambigüedad y la complejidad del tema. Las dinámicas socioculturales que afectan a ambos lados de la frontera representan un aspecto clave en el trabajo. De hecho, se aborda el tema sociocultural, en primer lugar, desde la perspectiva del lado uruguayo y, finalmente, desde el punto de vista del lado brasileño, con el propósito de comprender cómo ambas comunidades experimentan y perciben su pertenencia a la frontera. De hecho, la frontera entre Uruguay y Brasil, como todas las demás fronteras donde se ha desarrollado un dialecto de contacto, es un espacio híbrido, donde las culturas se entrelazan, y la cuestión de la identidad se complica. La educación lingüística constituye otro tema relevante en el estudio: se examinan las políticas lingüísticas adoptadas por ambos países y su impacto sobre el Portuñol. Finalmente, se exploran otros casos de Portuñol surgidos tanto en América como en el resto del mundo, analizando diferencias y similitudes desde un enfoque sociolingüístico.
