This thesis aims to analyse the construction and evolution of the historical figure of Theodelinda, Lombard queen between the late 6th and early 7th centuries, through a critical perspective that intertwines women’s and gender history, historiography, and the public use of memory. The work is structured in three parts. The first focuses on twentieth-century historiography, with particular attention to the studies of Gian Piero Bognetti, which strongly contributed to shaping the image of Theodelinda as a pious queen and Christianizer, an interpretation that proves, in light of the sources, to be highly ideological. The second part returns to contemporary or near-contemporary sources from Theodelinda’s lifetime, including Paul the Deacon’s Historia Langobardorum and texts up to the 10th century. These sources are examined through the lens of gender history, in order to explore how female power is represented and legitimised within the Lombard context. The third part traces the afterlife and transformation of Theodelinda’s figure in later narratives, up to the contemporary age, highlighting its multiple instrumentalizations in identity, ideological, and cultural terms. The aim of the thesis is thus to restore complexity to a figure often simplified and appropriated by tradition, placing her within a broader reflection on the construction of historical memory and on the role of women in early medieval queenship.
