La biblioteca tragica di Galeno

In the intellectual scene of the second century AD, Galen represents an exceptional case: he is placed between medical science and philosophy and his vast literary production develops from a wide variety of interests. Galen’s library was not limited to medical and philosophical texts, often in his writings you can find citations and cultural references that testify to the large number of works with which he came into contact during his life. Most of these quotations come from the classics of Greek literature and often reveal very interesting cultural routes. Among them there is a substantial number of quotations and allusions to the Greek tragedy and the great tragedies authors: Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. Galen uses different methods to cite these authors: direct quotations, references to tragedies, mention of names. Following the development of the tragic references present in the corpus galenico it is possible to try to reconstruct what were the texts available to Galeno, also obtaining information about his working methods.

Nel panorama intellettuale del II secolo d.C., Galeno rappresenta un caso eccezionale: egli si colloca tra scienza medica e filosofia e la sua vasta produzione letteraria si sviluppa a partire da un’ampia varietà di interessi. La biblioteca di Galeno non era limitata a testi medici e filosofici, spesso nei suoi scritti è possibile individuare citazioni e riferimenti culturali che testimoniano il gran numero di opere con cui è entrato in contatto nel corso della sua vita. La maggior parte di queste citazioni proviene dai classici della letteratura greca e spesso esse rivelano percorsi culturali molto interessanti. Tra queste vi è un numero consistente di citazioni e allusioni alla tragedia greca e ai grandi tragediografi: Eschilo, Sofocle e Euripide. Galeno ricorre a metodi differenti per citare questi autori: citazioni dirette, riferimenti alle tragedie, menzione dei nomi. Seguendo lo sviluppo dei riferimenti tragici presenti nel corpus galenico è possibile provare a ricostruire quali fossero i testi a disposizione di Galeno, ricavando inoltre informazioni sul suo metodo di lavoro.
