Vobiscum erravi. Introduzione e saggio di commento alla XII Filippica di Cicerone

The thesis focuses on Cicero's Twelfth Philippic, a text whose last commentary dates back to the 19th century and thus requires a profound critical update, both in terms of content and stylistic analysis. The work will begin with a comprehensive introductory essay, aimed at shedding light on: 1) The historical context (from March 44 BC to April 43 BC) in which the Philippics were delivered, with particular attention to reconstructing Cicero's relationships with the Caesarians after Caesar's death; 2) The main legal, political, and ethical issues addressed in the oration, with particular attention to some ethical themes discussed in the coeval De Officiis, which have so far received little critical in-depth analysis; 3) The rhetorical structure of the Twelfth Philippic; 4) An analysis of some features that characterize the language and style of Cicero's later orations. The essay will be followed by a commentary section on a significant part of the Twelfth Philippic, where all the aforementioned aspects of the text will be analytically examined in the ad locum notes, with particular attention to language and style, rhetorical choices, and intertextual depth.

La tesi è incentrata sulla dodicesima Filippica di M. Tullio Cicerone, un testo il cui ultimo commento risale al XIX secolo e che quindi necessita di un profondo aggiornamento critico, sia sul piano dei contenuti sia dal punto di vista stilistico. Il lavoro presenterà innanzitutto un ampio saggio introduttivo, vòlto a lumeggiare: 1) il contesto storico (da marzo 44 a.C. ad aprile 43 a.C.) in cui le Filippiche vennero pronunciate, con particolare attenzione alla ricostruzione dei rapporti che Cicerone intrattenne con i cesariani dopo la morte di Cesare; 2) i principali problemi giuridici, politici ed etici trattati nell’orazione, con particolare attenzione ad alcuni temi di carattere etico affrontati nel coevo De officiis, e sino a ora poco approfonditi dalla critica; 3) la struttura retorica della dodicesima Filippica; 4) l’analisi di alcuni tratti che contraddistinguono la lingua e lo stile delle ultime orazioni di Cicerone. Il saggio sarà seguito da una prova di commento a una sezione significativa della dodicesima Filippica, in cui verranno esaminati analiticamente nelle note ad locum tutti gli aspetti del testo sopra enunciati, con particolare attenzione alla lingua e allo stile, alle scelte retoriche, allo spessore intertestuale.
