This thesis aims to investigate and critically examine the phenomenon of sex work within a context of extreme vulnerability, deliberately distancing itself from the dominant narrative that portrays sex workers solely as passive victims of their social and structural context. Through active field research conducted in the northeast of Brazil and the analysis of empirical data, the study explores the complexity of individual trajectories, choices, and forms of agency enacted by these women, giving voice to subjectivities that are too often silenced or reduced to stereotypes. The stigma surrounding sex work is analysed as an expression of a broader patriarchal culture, which affects not only sex workers but all women who transgress socially constructed gender expectations. Within this framework, the thesis seeks to highlight how stigma can affect the lives of sex workers, their well-being, and their self-image and self-perception. The ultimate objective is to deconstruct deeply rooted prejudices and offer a more nuanced perspective—one that fosters ethical, social, and political reflection on the issue of sex work.

Abstract
The ultimate objective is to deconstruct deeply rooted prejudices and offer a more nuanced perspective—one that fosters ethical, social, and political reflection on the issue of sex work.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
