Measuring expertise in aesthetics: historical roots, theorical framework and empirical evidence from the VAIAK validation

This thesis explores the topic of artistic expertise, reviewing its history over time and proposing the validation of a questionnaire on the topic. In the field of empirical aesthetics, differences in how art experts and general viewers respond to artworks have long been recognized. It is possible that these differences partly contribute to the current gap between contemporary art and the general public. Although these differences are now well known, it is still unclear which specific aspects of expertise are responsible for this gap. This thesis will therefore present the historical development of the figure of the art expert in Western societies. Then, the different questionnaires used to identify art experts will be analyzed and compared, in order to understand how artistic expertise has been measured in the past and how it is measured today in scientific research. To better understand the current state of research, a recent model of how people respond to artworks will be used, which helps identify the variables that influence expert responses. Based on this analysis, the thesis will propose the validation of a questionnaire designed to measure knowledge and interest in the field of art. Finally, the conclusion will suggest possible future directions for research that are still to be explored.

Questa tesi affronta il tema della variabile dell’expertise artistica, ripercorrendone la storia e proponendo la validazione di un questionario sull'argomento. Nel campo dell’estetica empirica da tempo si riconoscono differenze nelle risposte alle opere d’arte tra studiosi dell'arte e i fruitori comuni. Si può ipotizza che queste differenze in parte contribuiscano alla attuale distanza tra arte contempoeanea e pubblico generale. Nonostante queste differenze siano ormai note, non è ancora chiaro quali aspetti dell’expertise causino questa distanza. In questa tesi verrà quindi presentata la storia della figura dell’esperto d’arte nelle società occidentali nel corso del tempo. Successivamente, saranno analizzati e confrontati i questionari utilizzati per identificare l’esperto d'arte, al fine di capire lo stato passato e presente delle misure di expertise in ambito scientifico. Per approfondire lo stato dell’arte, sarà impiegato un modello recente di risposta alle opere d’arte, utile per individuare le possibili variabili che influenzano l’esperto. A partire da questa analisi, verrà poi proposta la validazione di un questionario che misura la conoscenza e l’interesse nel campo artistico. Infine, la conclusione suggerirà possibili direzioni future ancora da esplorare nella ricerca.
