Early adolescence represents a crucial phase of psychosocial development, characterized by the construction of identity, the intensification of peer relationships, and a growing sensitivity to social influence. In this context, social media play a central role as spaces for interaction and self-exploration, allowing preadolescents to maintain constant connections even in the absence of physical proximity. The present study aims to explore the motivations that drive preadolescents to use social media, analyzing the relational, emotional, and identity-related dimensions associated with such practices. Through a mixed-method approach, data were collected via an exploratory questionnaire and six focus groups, involving a total of 53 students (aged 11–14) from a lower secondary school in Albignasego (Padua). The results highlight a widespread and daily use of social media platforms—particularly WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok—serving functions that range from entertainment to communication and the need for belonging. Gender differences emerged, with girls showing a greater focus on relational aspects and boys on playful ones. Although limited to a specific context, the study offers valuable insights for research and digital education, emphasizing the importance of promoting a mindful use of social media and strengthening preadolescents’ socio-emotional and digital skills.

Abstract
Although limited to a specific context, the study offers valuable insights for research and digital education, emphasizing the importance of promoting a mindful use of social media and strengthening preadolescents’ socio-emotional and digital skills.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
