The thesis aims to investigate the practices of parental involvement among families with a migratory background in their children’s educational trajectories and how these practices affect academic outcomes. Particular attention is devoted to the types of difficulties and challenges faced by students of immigrant origin, the strategies they adopt to cope with them, and the role of parental and social support networks. Following a sociodemographic overview of migrant families in Italy and a comparison of the school performance of students with an immigrant background and their native peers, the thesis reviews the literature on parental involvement and examines previous research on the educational performance of migrant-background students. The empirical section adopts a qualitative approach and is based on six in-depth interviews with young adults, all children of two migrant parents, who display different levels of educational attainment.

Abstract
The thesis aims to investigate the practices of parental involvement among families with a migratory background in their children’s educational trajectories and how these practices affect academic outcomes. Particular attention is devoted to the types of difficulties and challenges faced by students of immigrant origin, the strategies they adopt to cope with them, and the role of parental and social support networks. Following a sociodemographic overview of migrant families in Italy and a comparison of the school performance of students with an immigrant background and their native peers, the thesis reviews the literature on parental involvement and examines previous research on the educational performance of migrant-background students. The empirical section adopts a qualitative approach and is based on six in-depth interviews with young adults, all children of two migrant parents, who display different levels of educational attainment.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
