The thesis aims to analyze the evolution of the representation of women in the media from 2000 to the present day, with a particular focus on print media, television, and social media. The objective is to investigate how models of female representation are perpetuated by the media and how these have contributed to transforming the social perception of women’s roles, highlighting both the persistence of gender stereotypes and the progress toward greater inclusivity. This analysis can be divided into three main areas: - Print Media: An examination of persuasive techniques and the language used to describe women, and the impact these have on readers’ perceptions (tabloids, magazines, and newspapers). - Television: The focus will be on how women are presented to the public and how they interact within television contexts (interviews, talk shows, and entertainment programs). - Social Media: An analysis of digital feminist movements and their role in redefining the image of women in contemporary society. The three forms of media considered in this analysis share the underlying assumption that women are gradually reclaiming control over their own narratives. The progression starts with print media, where the female voice is almost entirely absent; moves through television, which allows for broader female participation; and concludes with an analysis of feminist movements that have emerged in recent years thanks to the freedom enabled by social media. The study will examine events originating in the United States and assess their potential impact on Italian media, drawing conclusions based on the influence and reception of these developments in the Italian context.
