The subject of this paper is the relationship between mystical experience and linguistic expression in The Mirror of Simple Souls by Marguerite Porete. This is an issue that concerns mystical texts in general, but in the Mirror it plays a central role, and on multiple levels. This explains why studies on the topic have developed in very different directions. In the first chapter, which corresponds to the status quaestionis, an attempt has been made to make order among these studies. It emerges that, although one can explore the subject broadly, any internal analysis of the language used in the Mirror should be regarded as secondary to a preliminary analysis concerning the very possibility that such a language (and thus the book as a whole) might come into being in the first place. In the following chapters, the paradox of the word is examined: on the one hand, we find the didactic purpose of the book; on the other hand, we find that the annihilated Soul, the one who writes the book «according to human knowledge and human feeling» strictly speaking, should not be able to write. The second chapter analyzes the first pole of the paradox, taking into account the Soul’s own statements and the stylistic features of the Mirror. The third chapter examines how the Soul is no longer the agent of her actions, but rather God is. In addition, it addresses other paradoxes that are explicitly stated by Reason as «double mots», which branch out from this point onward. The two poles are treated separately in the conviction that not every paradox needs to be resolved, but that it should instead be accepted as such and explored to its fullest depth.

Abstract
The two poles are treated separately in the conviction that not every paradox needs to be resolved, but that it should instead be accepted as such and explored to its fullest depth.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
