This thesis examines how English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) shapes the formation of a global identity among Erasmus students in Norway. It argues that ELF functions not only as a means of communication but also as a space for negotiating belonging across linguistic and cultural boundaries. Framed within the context of the Erasmus+ programme, the study analyses questionnaire data from participants to explore how language use fosters inclusion, intercultural understanding and a sense of shared global identity. The findings highlight ELF’s pivotal role in connecting diverse individuals and promoting transnational identity formation in international higher education.
