This thesis investigates the theme of the national identity of Italian music through a historiographical analysis focusing on the period from the late nineteenth century to the Fascism. The aim is to highlight how music was interpreted and employed as a tool for identity construction, assuming different meanings according to political and cultural contexts. The research is based on the examination of the main musical and cultural periodicals of the Fascist era, with particular attention to the ways in which the concepts of tradition, nationalism, and racism were addressed. The resulting picture is a complex one, in which music not only reflects the processes of nation-building but also becomes an integral part of the regime’s strategies of ideological legitimization. In this way, the study contributes to clarifying the role played by musical discourse in shaping Italian identity in the early twentieth century, while also underscoring the continuities with the nineteenth century and the transformations imposed by Fascism.

Abstract
In this way, the study contributes to clarifying the role played by musical discourse in shaping Italian identity in the early twentieth century, while also underscoring the continuities with the nineteenth century and the transformations imposed by Fascism.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
