This thesis explores Matteo Garrone's cinema, focusing in particular on his early films: the analysis highlights how the director depicts reality with a personal gaze, poised between crudeness and fairy-tale vision. One chapter is dedicated to the grotesque, understood both as a central element of his cinema and as a broader concept linked to art history and the idea of beauty. The aim is to show how, through the grotesque, Garrone manages to give shape to a world that is both disturbing and fascinating at the same time.
