In Twelfth-Century Byzantium, as a part of a widespread trend towards the sperimentation of new literary forms, several novels are composed, based on late antique greek models. This thesis explores the evolution of the ancient novel form in Niketas Eugenianus Drosilla and Charikles. Niketas includes among his models, in addition to the novels of Achilles Tatius, Longus the Sophist and Heliodorus, also the Theocrytean Idylls, the Greek anthology, the Anacreontae, and Musaeus’s Hero and Leander, showing a tendency to comprehensively incorporate Greek erotic literature. This study highlights how the topoi of late antique novel are resignified, in view of other models of Greek literary erotic tradition and contemporary literary taste.
