This thesis aims to undertake an anthropological analysis of Giovanni Verga’s short story La Lupa, with a particular focus on the interplay between desire, demonization, and social condemnation. The protagonist is examined as a liminal figure, positioned between the archetype of the beast-woman and the rural peasant reality of nineteenth-century Sicily. The study seeks to integrate textual analysis with the methodologies of literary criticism and cultural anthropology, drawing upon classical mythology, popular religiosity, and comparative frameworks such as the femme fatale archetype prevalent in contemporary literature, as well as contemporary theoretical perspectives on the body and eros. The research is structured into three chapters: the first situates Verga’s verist poetics within its anthropological context; the second explores La Lupa as a symbol of demonic eros and as the exemplary scapegoat within Verga’s oeuvre, supplemented by a brief examination of the anthropological mechanism of expiation that permeates Verga’s characters; the third chapter compares the novella’s protagonist with analogous literary and cultural models and analyzes how these figures serve to dissolve the boundary between Eros and Death. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that beneath the verist depiction, La Lupa reveals archaic, universal, and recurrent tensions, positioning the work as a pivotal text for understanding the nexus between nature, myth, and culture in European realism.
La tesi si pone come obiettivo l’analisi della novella “La Lupa” di G. Verga attraverso una lente antropologica, ponendo al centro il rapporto tra desiderio, demonizzazione e condanna sociale. La protagonista viene indagata nel suo aspetto di figura liminale, collocata tra l’archetipo della donna-fiera e la realtà contadina della Sicilia rurale ottocentesca. L’analisi vuole coniugare l’analisi testuale con gli strumenti della critica letteraria e dell’antropologia culturale, dal mito classico alla religiosità popolare, passando per la comparazione con l’archetipo della femme fatale della letteratura coeva, fino alle contemporanee teorie su corpo ed eros. La ricerca si articola in tre capitoli: il primo inquadra la poetica verista e il contesto antropologico; il secondo esplora la Lupa come simbolo di eros demoniaco e capro espiatorio d’eccellenza della raccolta verghiana, con supplemento di breve analisi del meccanismo antropologico d’espiazione che pervade i personaggi di Verga; il terzo mette a confronto la protagonista della novella con altri modelli letterari e culturali affini e analizza come, tramite queste personalità, venga assottigliato il confine tra Eros e Morte. Il fine ultimo è quello di dimostrare come, dietro il ritratto verista, La Lupa riveli tensioni arcaiche, universali e ricorrenti, che rendono l’opera un testo cardine per comprendere il rapporto tra natura, mito e cultura nel realismo europeo.
