This dissertation aims to analyze the survival strategies adopted by communities in Darfur in response to the civil war, which has caused a severe famine in the region, and to the resulting ethnic violence. Particular attention is given to grassroots mutual aid organizations, such as the Emergency Response Rooms; the effectiveness of this type of response is also assessed, especially in the context of conflicts in which traditional international humanitarian actors, due to logistical challenges arising from the intensity of the fighting or the geographical conditions of the region, struggle to reach the most affected areas.
