This thesis aims to analyze the reality of female labor in the context of Italian urban space between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, paying particular attention to relevant aspects such as contractual conditions, forms of remuneration and the relationships between female workers and their employers. The research seeks to foreground women’s agency, namely the capacity for action demonstrated by female workers, in order to challenge the model that relegates them to a state of complete subordination and passivity. A careful examination of primary and secondary sources allows for a focused investigation into the figure of the wet nurse, highlighting her identity and role within the households that employed her. This work aspires to offer a critical perspective on female labor during the delicate transition from the Middle Ages to the modern age, deconstructing stereotypes and opening new avenues of inquiry aimed at enhancing the contribution of working women to the economy and society.
