Gasindi. Profilo politico e socioeconomico di un'élite longobarda

This thesis examines the figure of the gasindi, members of an elite within the Lombard kingdom. The aim is to outline a comprehensive profile of this group by studying the political and social functions they exercised, followed by an analysis of their patrimonial wealth in relation to other members of the contemporary elite. To this end, a comparative analysis will be carried out between the gasindi of the Lombard Kingdom in northern Italy and those of the duchies of Benevento and Spoleto, with the purpose of highlighting similarities and differences. The sources used include primary materials such as the Lombard legislative corpus and the Lombard Diplomatic Code, complemented by a wide range of secondary literature. The study makes it possible to define more precisely the role of the gasindi within Lombard society and to shed light on certain social and economic dynamics of the Early Middle Ages.

La tesi presenta la figura dei gasindi, esponenti di un’élite del regno longobardo. L’obiettivo è delinearne un profilo complessivo, studiando le funzioni politiche e sociali che esercitavano, per poi affrontare l'analisi della loro consistenza patrimoniale in rapporto ad altri membri dell'élite della stessa epoca. Nel fare ciò, avrò cura di svolgere un'analisi comparativa tra i gasindi presenti nel Regno longobardo nell’Italia settentrionale e quelli dei ducati di Benevento e Spoleto, con l’intento di evidenziare punti in comune e differenze. Le fonti utilizzate comprendono fonti primarie come il corpus legislativo longobardo e il Codice diplomatico longobardo, integrate da un vasto corpus di fonti secondarie. Lo studio consente di definire con maggiore precisione il ruolo dei gasindi nella società longobarda e di mettere in luce alcune dinamiche sociali ed economiche dell'Alto Medioevo.
