Social theater emerged in Italy after the Second World War, driven by the need to make art accessible to all, but above all to give it a social dimension. It developed as a means of expressing shared needs and feelings in a world striving for change. Theater of the Oppressed (THO) is a branch of social theater. This theatrical form originated in Brazil during the military dictatorship. Its creator, Augusto Boal, wanted to offer oppressed people the opportunity to express themselves, expose the dynamics of oppression, and find tools to counter them. Born in the second half of the twentieth century, THO has gained popularity worldwide, becoming a powerful means of expression and struggle against injustice. In Italy, Boal's thinking has significantly influenced the Giolli Cooperative, an organization founded in Emilia Romagna in 1992. The cooperative is active in both Italian and international projects. One of these, the OPEN project, was launched in schools in the Parma area and involves students of all ages, with the aim of raising awareness against gender-based violence.
