Work commitment is traditionally regarded as a virtue: dedication, availability, and sacrifice are qualities rewarded both culturally and within managerial practices. In organizational management, the aim of maximizing efficiency often leads to demanding high levels of effort and presence from employees. While such strategies may yield immediate benefits in terms of output and speed of execution, what appears to be an advantage can turn into a hidden cost. When organizations explicitly or implicitly encourage unlimited dedication, dynamics are triggered that undermine the sustainability of collective performance, generating structural inefficiencies in the medium to long term. The paradox lies in the fact that the most engaged workers—those most willing to make sacrifices—are often also the most vulnerable. It is within this framework that the present study is situated, with the objective of analyzing the negative repercussions of work dedication and clarifying how vulnerability to exploitation represents the key mechanism through which the meaning attributed to work, rather than protecting the individual and supporting the organization, may paradoxically contribute to their fragility.
L’impegno lavorativo è tradizionalmente considerato una virtù: dedizione, disponibilità e sacrificio sono qualità premiate tanto nella cultura quanto nelle pratiche manageriali. Nella gestione delle attività organizzative, l’obiettivo di massimizzare l’efficienza porta spesso a richiedere ai lavoratori livelli elevati di impegno e presenza, ma sebbene tali strategie possano generare benefici immediati in termini di output e rapidità di esecuzione, ciò che appare come un vantaggio può trasformarsi in un costo nascosto. Laddove le organizzazioni incoraggiano, esplicitamente o implicitamente, una dedizione illimitata, si innescano dinamiche che compromettono la sostenibilità delle performance collettive, generando inefficienze strutturali nel medio-lungo termine. Il paradosso risiede nel fatto che i lavoratori maggiormente coinvolti e disposti al sacrificio sono spesso anche i più vulnerabili. È proprio a partire da questa cornice che si colloca il presente studio, con l’obiettivo di analizzare le ripercussioni negative della dedizione lavorativa e di chiarire in che modo la vulnerabilità allo sfruttamento rappresenti il meccanismo chiave attraverso cui il significato attribuito al lavoro, anziché proteggere l’individuo e sostenere l’organizzazione, possa paradossalmente alimentarne la fragilità.
