The present thesis aims to analyse two of Rubén Darío's most representative works: Azul y Cantos De Vida y Esperanza. In particular, it will examine how the modernist human being is shaped and how he evolves throughout the author’s production. After an introduction, the first chapter will analyse the historical context of Modernism and the meaning of the color ‘blue’ acquired in that period and in Rubén Darío’s works. The following chapters will then focus on the themes of night and journey, understood as a fundamental path to achieve the true reason for human beings’ existence in the world. Through this work, some of the most important passages of these works will be analysed, offering a personal interpretation of their meaning. Moreover, special attention will be paid throughout the three chapters to the metaphors employed.
